October 17, 2024 – Bloomberg New Economy today announced new speakers and unveiled updates to the program at Bloomberg New Economy at B20, its special gathering of business and government leaders in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

This event, convened in collaboration with the annual Business 20 (B20) forum on Oct. 22-23 in Sao Paulo, brings to South America for the first time Bloomberg New Economy’s unique approach to building a global community of trailblazers determined to take on the world’s most pressing problems. More than 250 delegates from across the globe will participate in dialogues on such issues as the destabilizing shift in trade patterns, the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on finance and media, the uncertain outlook for biodiversity amid climate change, the need for greater investment in public health, and the growing influence of populism on economic policy.

The program at Bloomberg New Economy at B20 is built on a theme that captures this uncertain moment in time: ‘New Reality, New Rules’. It begins with an opening dinner on October 22, followed by a full day of panel discussions, newsmaker interviews, deep-dive breakouts, bilateral meetings and public-private workshops on October 23. Highlights include:

  • Climate-Proofing the Economy: As the impact and cost of climate change escalates, what policies, technologies and financial mechanisms can economies adopt to mitigate risk and minimize the devastation from storms, drought, heat and rising sea levels?
  • Navigating a Divided World: Emerging economies want to maximize optionality and, ultimately, growth by doing business with as many countries as possible. Yet maintaining that neutrality has become more challenging as global trade and investment fragment along geopolitical lines. To succeed, companies and governments must master these new dynamics to understand where to give ground as well as where to exert leverage.
  • The Digital Dilemma: For creators and consumers, the digitization of media has been a welcome boon. We live in a golden age of content. But the emergence of generative AI poses new challenges. Can distribution platforms take advantage of this powerful new technology while also safeguarding privacy, safety and intellectual property?
  • The Prosperity Predicament: A steady increase in the global standard of living is draining the planet of resources and imperiling its natural systems while acute scarcity fuels mass migration. Is there a sustainable–and more equitable–way of satisfying the burgeoning demand for travel, housing, protein and packaged goods?

“It’s clear, almost five years on from the onset of Covid-19, that a new reality has taken hold of the world economy–a reality shaped by war, geopolitics, inflation, migration, populism, protectionism, and global warming. What’s not clear is how to navigate this new reality,” said Erik Schatzker, Editorial Director of Bloomberg New Economy. “By bringing our conversation to Brazil, one of the original BRICs, we not only deepen our community’s engagement with Latin America but add critical local and regional perspective to the demanding topics on our agenda.”

Bloomberg New Economy at B20 is supported by Bayer, Envision, HSBC, Hyundai, Tata and UBS. Singapore is the Host Country Partner of the 2025 Bloomberg New Economy Forum.
